Friends and fellow citizens,
Well I am speaking in church...again...much to my dismay! And the topic is actually a very hard one for me; Fasting. I am not exactly the most qualified to speak on fasting (i.e. I don't exactly fast much!)
So as usual I am posting this in hopes that someone out there will help me out and send me some advice/quotes/stories or anything at all that might be of use. And usually when I ask for help with this sort of thing NOBODY responds! (probably because I am anti-social, sorry about that) But please, please, please, if you can think of anything that would help feel free to post it.
Much Obliged,
Courtney
Okay, first I am going to tell you to go to LDS.org and on the right hand side of the screen there is something that says "Prepare a Talk", go to that, and it will take you to another page where there is a short list of topics, some pictures of church magazines, etc, under that list of topics select "more" and it will take you to a place where you can choose topics alphabetically. Go to "F" and there is one that says "Fasting and Fast Offerings" and it will give you scriptures, conference talks, etc that all go with that topic. I had a lengthy discussion with my mom yesterday about fasting because it makes me sick so I don't anymore. She can't fast either, but we both talked about how we know that fasting works. When I was young my dad was diagnosed with a disease called Sarcadosis and from what I understand it is treated like cancer and you can die from it. There was a fast for my dad and afterwards there was no trace of sarcadosis in him. It was a miracle that happened through the faith of those fasting for my dad. Yesterday when I was talking to my mom and we were talking about how we can't fast from meals she said that something she tries to do is to concentrate on studying the scriptures, praying, concentrating on the spirit, paying fast offerings, etc, on Fast Sundays so that she can still be close to the spirit and show that she is making an effort to honor fast sundays and fasting even though she can't miss the meals. I don't know if this helps you at all, but I hope it does. Good luck with your talk!
ReplyDeleteSince I've been pregnant, nursing, back surgery meds and pregnant again its been a long time since I've been able to consistently fast...I actually kind of miss it. Something that used to help Jer and I remember to fast was coming up with something to fast for together the day before- sometimes we would then break our fast together with prayer. It helps to have someone to fast with because if you are like us it's so easy to wake up on Fast Sunday and totally forget. I remember the Goldthorpes used to have a sign on their pantry on fast sunday to help everyone remember- I thought that was a great idea. Anyways- we need to play! Call me....yah right, I'll call you. haha just kidding.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard for me to speak on some things too. Maybe before you actually have to give your talk you, and ask your hubby too if he is willing, should think of something to fast for and try to do a sincere fast. Nobody has to be dying or anything. It could actually be to strengthen your testimony on fasting. I promise I am not perfect at this but it is easier to speak on something that you can relate with. There was this great story of this little boy named Bronson in Utah that drowned. His mom kept a blog about his recovery and if you are ready for a tear jerker with a happy ending you should take a look. It was through the faith, prayers, and fasting of some of God's children that made this miracle happen. Check it out and go back to the beginning of the story. http://www.stakerzxposed.blogspot.com
